Voter Search is a great site to see your ballot once they are available.  You can also find your voting location.  
Also look for information from Polk County Dems before the election and at polling sites.

Absentee-By-Mail Voting

Important dates
September 9:   Date by which the board of elections must make absentee ballots available
November 1:     Deadline for civilians to submit an absentee ballot request form
November 8:    Civilian absentee ballot return deadline (and Election Day)
Who can vote by mail   Any NC registered voter- No special circumstances or reasons are needed.
​How to vote by mail (refer to this NCSBE site for complete information)
Request a ballot- Your date of birth and the following form of ID: NCDMV license number / ID card or last 4 digits of SSN
​Option 1:  Online request for a ballot.  Keep checking back if the ballot isn't available. It must be available by September 9.  
Option 2: By paper using  a fillable PDF form (you fill it out online, print, sign, and send) or a print-only PDF form.
Complete a ballot- This requires several steps
  • Mark you ballot in presence of notary public or 2 witnesses
  • Seal your ballot
  • Sign your name on the back of envelope
  • Witnesses/notary public sign the envelope
    They sign and print their name; provide their full address on the back of the envelope
    Witness must be at least 18y (unless the candidate is your near relative or legal guardian and you are requesting assistance due to disability).
    If you received assistance, the assistant must sign their name, print their name, and provide their full address on the back of the ballot
Return a ballot
  • Mail your ballot with correct postage (60 cents or one Forever Stamp) to be received by 5pm election day (November 8). But send it in as early as possible.
  • Return ballot in person to Polk County Board of Elections (Womack Building, 40 Courthouse St, Columbus) or to one-stop early voting site (also Womack Building)
  • Only the voter, near relative or legal guardian may mail or hand-deliver the Return Envelope.  A neighbor, friend, or stranger cannot mail or hand-deliver the Return Envelope.
    If you need assistance returning your ballot due to disability, these restrictions do not apply.  You may ask any person you choose to return your ballot.  The individual providing assistance can take the sealed ballot envelope to the nearest mail depository (you own residential mailbox, if you have one) or to the closest mailbox.  The individual mailing your ballot must sign the "Voter Assistant Certification" on the back of the ballot envelope.
