Polk County is divided into 2 congressional districts- 11 and 14 (see 2024 Election home page).  Therefore, there are separate sample ballots for District 11 and District 14.  Columbus 1, Columbus 2, Tryon, Green Creek and part of White Oak are in District 14.  Saluda, Coopers Gap, and part of White Oak are still in District 11.

An acceptable photo ID is needed for voting starting in 2024!

Starting with Polk County's 2024 election you will be required to have a valid ID to vote in-person or provide a copy  for absentee ballots.  Click on the link above to find out all the details from the NC State Board of Elections (NCSBE).

If you have a NC driver's license, a State ID from the NCDMV, a U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card, a college/university student ID approved by the NCSBE unexpired or expired for 1 year or less, then you are good to go.  A voter 65y or older may used an expired form of an acceptable ID if it was unexpired on their 65th birthday.  Student and public employee approved ID lists are provided in the link above.

All voters will be allowed to vote with or without a photo ID. If a voter cannot show photo ID when voting in person, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form. If absentee-by-mail voters are unable to include a copy of their photo ID with their ballot return envelope, they can also fill out an ID Exception Form with their ballot. Absentee - By Mail - Voting

To accommodate the impact of Tropical Storm Helene, absentee ballots can be dropped off in person at the Polk County Board of Elections (231 Ward St., Columbus) by 7:30 pm on Tuesday, November 5.

PHOTO ID NOW NEEDED!  (see Voter ID information above).  A photocopy of an acceptable ID must be included in the absentee ballot request.  A Photo ID Exception Form ​is included with the absentee ballot return envelope, if applicable.  Acceptable exceptions include, but not limited to:  Lack of transportation, Disability or illness, and Lack of birth certificate or other documents needed to obtain ID.
3-day Grace Period for Receipt of Mail-in Ballot Removed.  Receipt of absentee (mail-in) ballots must be ​received by 7:30pm (close of polls) on election day! 
Required Witness Signatures on Mail-in Envelope.  Two witnesses must sign and print their names, and provide their full address OR the application can be certified by a notary public.
